Chronic absenteeism and lower academic performance

Problem:

The specific group of students my goal focuses on is 7th- and 8th-grade students with IEPs who have 10 or more absences at Maple View Middle School. I chose this group because, when reviewing the school's data, students with IEPs consistently showed higher rates of chronic absenteeism and lower academic performance compared to their peers. This pattern suggests that attendance is a significant barrier impacting both their academic success and overall school experience. Focusing on this subgroup enables more intentional, targeted interventions rather than a broad, one-size-fits-all approach. Middle school is already a challenging transition period, and for students with IEPs, additional factors such as academic frustration, anxiety, or feeling disconnected from school may contribute to increased absences. By addressing attendance in this group, the goal is to improve not only their presence at school but also their engagement, confidence, and academic outcomes. Research supports the importance of attendance as a foundational factor in student success. When students are consistently present, they are more likely to benefit from instruction, build relationships with peers and staff, and feel a stronger sense of belonging (Balfanz & Byrnes, 2012). By targeting students with IEPs who are experiencing attendance challenges, this goal aims to reduce barriers and create more equitable opportunities for success. Respond to the post.
