This is a modern technique employed for the separation of mixtures into its components, purification of compounds and as well to test the purity of elements. The name chromatography is related along with the Greek word 'chroma' meaning colour and 'graphy' for writing as the technique was first employed for the separation of coloured substances found in plants. This technique was described by Tswett in 1906.
