Chloroform or trichloromethane, CHCl3
It is a significant trihalogen derivative of methane. It was given by Liebig in year 1831 and its name chloroform was proposed by Dumas as it provide formic acid on hydrolysis. It was mainly utilized as anaesthetic for surgery but now it is rarely utilized as it causes liver damage.
