Children living in poverty are still worthy and unworthy

Problem: Children living in poverty are still worthy and unworthy of support. A great example of this is depicted in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). TANF assists low-income families with children. These parents are often described as unworthy of help. An emphasis is placed on work, as people with power oppose cash assistance programs that would raise incomes enough that low-wage workers could escape poverty out of fear that such benefits discourage work. Minimizing cash assistance program resources is prioritized over child poverty. Children living in poverty face many risk factors that affect their education and socialization skills. When children are experiencing many adverse events, transitions, and insecurities, their ability to focus and behave in their environment is challenged since they lack necessities compared to their peers, such as food, hygiene products, adequate education, a safe home environment, clothing, and risk delayed growth due to adverse childhood traumas.
