In 1870s and 1880s Americans were comfortless with the bizarre concept of "mechanical writing" which was the major cause to the problem of early typewriter finding a market. The lethargic financial circumstances also held responsibility to the deficiency of marketing foresight. Imperfection of the typewriter may also have taken part in causing this problem. Never the less, in the 1880s, a marketing innovation finally arose with the advancement of the notion of "scientific management" and with the specialism of work, the typewriter finally received acceptance.

This obliged small businesses into the media society and as this community began to depend more and more on the typewriter, the demand for trained typist became substantial. Therefore, in 1881, Young Women's Christian Association commenced offering typing courses and the training organisation for women opened across the country. Since temporary typists' wages were too low to be contemplated by the majority of men, the positions were allocated to women.

"By the 1920's Christopher Latham Sholes, the primary inventor of the sholes and Glidden, could be hailed as a great contributor to women's liberation," states Richard Polt, philosophy professor at Xavier and typewriter collector. Typing has speeded the preparation of documents and advanced their legibility. It was a crucial tool for editors, authors, everyday citizens and media employers to make proficient documents as it replaced the tradition of handwriting communication with a pen-and-ink.
