Characterize how species regrew

Problem:

Is there a way to generally characterize how species "regrew" after the various mass extinction events happening periodically from 450 Ma to 65 Ma.

Would the surviving species just start back where they had left off and evolve willy-nilly as if the destroyed 50% or 70% of biodiversity species had never existed?

Or would the biome in some way have the capacity to regroup something resembling the former order based just on the remaining species. Please give some suggestion on this.
