Centralized versus decentralized database management systems

Assignment:

"Centralized versus Decentralized Database Management Systems" Answer the following:

  • Big Data brought its own challenges to the field of databases. What are these challenges, and how does the emerging NoSQL model address these challenges?
  • The different NoSQL technologies were created to meet different needs. Choose one of the NoSQL data models and describe it. Explain what kind of applications would benefit from your chosen NoSQL data model.

"Centralized versus Decentralized Database Management Systems" Answer the following:

Big Data brought its own challenges to the field of databases. What are these challenges, and how does the emerging NoSQL model address these challenges?

The challenges when it comes to Big Data are volume, velocity, and variety. Volume is the amount of data to be stored. Velocity is the speed at which data is entering the system. Variety are the variations in the structure of the data to be stored. NoSQL addresses volume by using the graph model. NoSQL addresses velocity by optimizing for high write loads and by having flexible data models.NoSQL addresses variety by designing from the bottom up to adjust for a wide diversity of data and flexibly address future data needs.

The different NoSQL technologies were created to meet different needs. Choose one of the NoSQL data models and describe it. Explain what kind of applications would benefit from your chosen NoSQL data model.

I chose the MongoDB model. It's a document data model that allows for iterative and adaptive data modeling. It also allows you to incorporate new data into your application without a predefined schema (it's adaptive data modeling, or flexible schema design). When it comes to modern applications it is built for it. Modification of the schema without downtime, simplification of the design, and reduction of the complexity in developing applications.
