Design Report - STATIC FLUID ANALYSIS

Understanding static fluid forces is a foundational component of understanding fluid mechanics. Several attributes of fluid pressure that are common in fluid mechanics principles are listed below:

  • Hydraulic Machines
  • Hydrostatic Forces

For this design problem you must design the lock system (number and location of pistons and pressure necessary to run the pistons) for the Lower Granite Dam in Washington State.

Lower Granite Dam Details

  • Length = 674 feet
  • Width = 86 feet
  • Height = 90 feet

Design lock gates?

1. Sketch the design (location and number of pistons on the top and bottom lock gates).

2. What diameter and length of the piston will you use to open the lock gates?  (NOTE: the pistons must be a "reasonable" size).

3. What is the maximum pressure necessary to feed the piston on the lock gates?

NOTE:  Please state any assumptions that are used in the design process.
