History of Planning (URP 500)
Paper Topic:
The topic for the first brief paper will be as follows. Critically discuss the common theme/themes (chpts 1-8) that Jackson discussed in his book titled “Crabgrass Frontier: The Suburbanization of the United States.” Evaluate the theme/themes in terms of its usefulness to understanding the history of the planning profession and evolution of planner’s role in the larger society. Please be sure to explain the theme/themes in detail.
Paper Description:
The brief paper must not exceed four pages. The paper is due on September 27th. The paper will be typed and double spaced in 12 point Times New Roman font. On your paper please make sure that you identify yourself with your name and J number. Unidentified papers will not be graded. The paper is due on the due date by MIDNIGHT. No credit will be given for late papers. You will be graded on the following criteria: clarity, grammar, logical consistency, and thoughtfulness. Each criterion is worth 1.5 points for a total of 6 points. Blatantly incorrect papers will receive a failing grade.
Presentation Description:
On the due date, each student will participate in the discussion centered on the assigned topic with at least one thoughtfully elaborated comment. All participation must be related to the literature (assigned and/or referenced). For participation, grade will be based on making a comment and thoughtfulness.
