The Victorian period is one of both great faith and great doubt. Authors including Charles Darwin, Matthew Arnold, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Elizabeth Gaskell, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and others wrestle with questions of Christian faith.
Write a paper in which you make an argument about how ONE or TWO works address religious faith.
What does the author suggest about the nature of faith? Of doubt? Can they co-exist?
Can one lead to the other? What are the causes of doubt? What are its effects? Is there a "solution" to doubt?
Does there need to be a solution, or can doubt be productive in its own way?
What kinds of choices or decisions or actions does/should faith enable? What is the relationship between faith (or doubt) and organized religion?
Essay should be a minimum of 1200 words; most will be four to six pages, not including works cited page.
• Develop an arguable thesis stating your interpretation and point to specific details from your chosen text(s) to support your thesis.
• Use MLA, 8e format for essay (heading, margins, in-text citations, works cited page). Be sure to cite sources, including primary source(s), accurately and fully.
