Case Scenario: CAN ADMINISTRATORS AND PHYSICIANS WORK TOGETHER?

Due to the recent and upcoming changes in the healthcare system, physicians, hospitals, and ambulatory care facilities are becoming more and more pressured to contract with one another and offer a more seamless means for healthcare. Please answer the questions below such that this is the case a hospital and group of physicians working together to integrate systems.

George Johnson has been a CEO of 150-bed Saint Vincent's Hospital for 17 years. Over that long period of time, he has become known as a strong leader and a person not to be crossed.

When several physicians approached George two years ago about establishing a task force to look into starting an integrated system, little did they know that George had been attending conferences and studying the literature on this subject. He had been told to be patient, to not take the lead or get ahead of the physicians. He was thrilled that physicians wanted to proceed, and a task force was formed.

During the six months of meetings of the physician-dominated task force, George seldom spoke. In fact, there were meetings where he uncharacteristically never said a word. However, George and his staff were active in the background, providing information to the consultants and suggesting strategies for getting physicians to buy in to the process. The process resulted in the formation of a for-profit limited liability health plan. Although it was not the organizational model George had envisioned, it worked to move the organization into integrated health care.

Remember, another element of the discussion board requirements is to comment on two of your classmates' responses.

Student 1:

Question 1. An integrated healthcare system is a joint effort of physician and hospital integration for different purposes. The primary strength of the process described in the case is that it brought together two of key stakeholders in health care to collaborate in coming up with an integrated system. Physicians, hospitals and insurers are the key stakeholders in the setup of a healthcare delivery system. The second strength of the process is that the administrator allowed the allowed the doctors to take the lead in structuring the system and he only performed a supporting role. The final strength is that the process resulted in the formation of the integrated health care.

Question 2. If George had taken a more active role, the same result would not have been achieved. In the case, George has been described as a strong leader and person not to be crossed. If he had taken an active role, he would have dominated the physicians and pushed for things to be done his way. In addition, the organizational model formed at the end of the process was not what George envisioned and if he were taking an active role the organization model that he had in mind would have been the result and not the one formed.

Question 3. The physicians were leading the process. From the knowledge George gained from attending conferences and studying materials on integrated systems, he learned not to take the lead and therefore, he allowed the physicians to take the lead. The physicians were also leading the process because physicians dominated the task force mandated to form the new organization and George seldom spoke during the meetings. George and his staff mostly provided background information to the consultants.

Student 2:

1. What were the strengths of the process described in the case study?

The strengths of the process described in the case study were that the process introduced by George had no as such interest in profit rather providing the good form to serve humanity. Not only was this but the organization changed into the health care scheme where people could get themselves treated with good environment. He wanted to help the physicians to improve the standard and quality of the work. All these processes were a step taken by George himself.

2. If George had taken a more active role, would the same result have been accomplished?

If George would have taken an active role in the work form which physicians were upto, thing would have changed because George was highly skilled with great extent of information which the physicians did not know, this could help the system step towards positivity and would have helped a lot in several aspects of life.

3. Who was leading the process? Explain your answer.

Firstly, George was asked not to interfere in the matters of physicians as he was only to work in the administrator scheme. George was indirectly leading the process by providing the best of services to the physicians as well as providing relevant information to the consultants which would give them a hand in upcoming tasks. George wanted the scheme to be at its best form and to be active in serving humanity, it could not be the way he had dreamt of but yes it did change into the health acre better system than before.
