Calculating sum of squared deviations

Assignment:

You are allowed to take the deviations of the data points in a sample of size n, from k numbers you select, in order to calculate the sum of squared deviations (SSD). You select them to minimize SSD. How many degrees of freedom are associated with this SSD? As k increases, what happens to the degrees of freedom? What happens to SSD? What happens to MSD = SSD/df(SSD)?

Your answer must be typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font (size 12), one-inch margins on all sides, APA format and also include references.
