How much CO₂ is released during the combustion of 1 tonne of coal? In this example we will assume that all 'element carbon' reacts with oxygen, viz.:-

C(12) + O₂(2x16) → CO₂ (44)

Using the relative atomic masses of carbon (12) and oxygen (16), we can estimate that 12 kg of carbon will produce 44 kg of CO₂. Therefore, each kilogram of carbon within coal will release (44/12) = 3.67 kg of CO₂.
