Calculate the local atmospheric pressure in the city

1. Write out the differences between:

a) close system and open system;

give one example and state what type of system it is

b) intensive property and extensive property

give one example and state what type of property it is

2. The temperature of ambient air in a certain location is -30oC. Express this temperature in oF, K, and R units.

3. The temperature of water changes by 10R during a process. Express this temperature change in oF, oC and K units.

For the following calculation, take g = 9.8 m/s2.

4. Determine the atmospheric pressure at a location where the barometric reading is 720mmHg, given the specific gravity of mercury to be 13.6.

5. The absolute pressure in water (water density is 1000kg/m3) at a depth of 5 m is read to be 145kPa. Determine (a) the local atmospheric pressure; and (b) the absolute pressure at a depth of 3m in a liquid whose specific gravity is 0.85 at the same location.

6. The pilot of an airplane reads the altitude 8000m and the absolute pressure 25kPa when flying over a city. Calculate the local atmospheric pressure in the city in kPa and in mmHg. Take the densities of air and mercury to be 1.2 kg/m3 and 13600 kg/m3, respectively.
