Calculate the load and resistance factors for a reliability

(a) Calculate the load and resistance factors for a reliability of 99% when the strength has a mean value of 65.4 MPa and COV 22%; the stress has a mean value 32.7 MPA and COV 11%.

(b) Calculate the resulting safety factor and compare it to the safety factor in Exercise 1.6 and comment on your finding.

Exercise 1.6

(a) Calculate the load and resistance factors using the data of Exercise 1.4 and a reliability of 99%.

(b) Calculate the resulting safety factor.

Exercise 1.4

Consider a material with measured strength values F given in Table 1.2. Assume the expected stress values to be one-half of the values in Table 1.2. Calculate the safety factor and the reliability of the system.

Example 1.3

Consider the experimental observations of strength reported in Table 1.2 (p. 23). Sort the data into 7 bins of equal width ?S to cover the entire range of the data. Build a histogram reporting the number of observations per bin. Compute the mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variance. Plot the histogram. Plot the normal probability density function.
