Course Overview:

At the beginning of the course in Exam 1 material, you will be applying your knowledge of Accounting in financial ratio analysis and forecasting the financing needs of the firm. Then in Exam 2 material, you will be developing skills in finding the present value and future value of cash flows, which will be used to find the payments necessary to purchase a house or a car, retirement planning, and the value of stocks and bonds. In Exam 3 material, you will learn techniques for choosing the best projects to pursue in a firm, including the ability to calculate the appropriate cash flows that a project will provide. And finally, in the new material for the Final Exam, you will learn how to calculate the Weighted Average Cost of Capital (or WACC) for a firm, which is the required rate of return for a project that is necessary to justify spending funds on the project.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to be able to accomplish and demonstrate a number of outcomes. A complete list of the specific outcomes is contained within the Syllabus. On a higher level, students are expected to be able to:

Apply their Accounting knowledge to analyze the financial condition of a firm, which includes preparing a financial ratio analysis and forecasting future financing needs.

Calculate present values and future values to solve problems such as purchasing a house or a car, developing a retirement plan, or valuing stocks and bonds.

Calculate the appropriate cash flows for individual projects, and choose the best projects to pursue to maximize the value of the firm.

Calculate the Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) as a required return for projects to justify spending funds on the projects.
