Calculate shear stress acting on top and bottom surfaces


There is flow between two plates as shown in the schematic. The bottom plate is stationary. The top plate is moving at a constant velocity of U = 1 m/s. The gap between the two plates is h = 0.005 m. The fluid has a viscosity of 2 N-s/m2. Assume the fluid is Newtonian.

A) Write the velocity profile, v of the fluid between the plates in terms of y, h and U.

B) Calculate the shear stress acting on the top and bottom surfaces (at y = 0 and y = h).
