The purpose of the case study homework is to be able to sort and organize information to present specific actions by involved stakeholders. A case study undertaking can involve one, two or three students in this class. It will not be a plan. It will be more like a shopping list of specific things various people and agencies could do to help resolve an environmentally related problem or issue.

The end product will be a concise analysis of the issue around six single spaced pages with the list of suggested stakeholders' actions on one page.

There are examples of case studies in the other Topic folders and on the internet. There is no particular guide for the format or presentation of content in a case study. Finally, your case study will be the product of information from several sources and all sources must be c redited.

Steps for submitting a case study are:

A. Select a current problem or issue from the list below or select another topic of your choice from the news media or from personal involvement. It is strongly recommended that it be about environmental conditions at a specific place.

B. Gather all the information you think you will need. Be sure to include the history of the issue and a clear understanding of "what is at stake".

C. Sort through the information identifying what laws or regulations apply. Identify what governmental agencies are involved and what roles they may be playing.

D. List what private entities are involved including, non-profit or for profit organizations, corporations, consultants, special interest groups, resource users and,of course, individuals of note.

E. Briefly explain what policies (government or otherwise) apply to your site including your opinion of why policies are or are not effective.

F. List possible solutions to the issue or problem identifying who, from the above list of players, will do what (specific actions) to reach an acceptable solution. This is the most important part of the homework!
