Problem 1: Name two ways in which governing as an American president with a Congress is different than governing as a British prime minister with a parliament. Be specific.
Problem 2: Briefly describe the White House Office, executive office, and cabinet. What is the role of each, and who serves in each?
Problem 3: What do we mean when we say the president often runs as an "outsider"? What jobs do we typically see presidents serve before they enter the White House? Be sure to give me at least two of the most popular offices from which occupants jump to the presidency and an example of a president who made such a transition.
Problem 4: Name the three branches of government. Name three checks on power that one branch can use on another branch (all checks do not have to come from the same branch or check power on the same branch; feel free to mix it up).
Problem 5: List two reasons why incumbents in Congress typically have an advantage electorally.
Problem 6: In course lecture slides, 3 broad eras of the Supreme Court were defined. Describe these eras, detailing roughly when they took place and what the courts' concerns were during each era.
Problem 7: List at least three differences between the House of Representatives and the Senate (in terms of rules, organization, legislative process, etc.). Only one of your differences may concern term length or number of members in each body.
