Both the doctrinaire and the philosophy-laden organizations

Both the doctrinaire and the philosophy-laden organizations are seeking to stay union-free. The doctrinaire organization stays union-free by paying and treating their workers pretty much like the union would do.

The philosophy-laden organization stays union-free by paying and treating their workers well, but they also seek to "engage" them in the business, help them learn and grow professionally and encourage them to "act like owners."   We read about the stuff that Google and other such "new age" companies provide their workers, but the real meaningful difference is the "work" their workers are engaged in. As a reminder, "employee engagement" simply means that workers have a strong emotional bond to their organization, are actively involved in and committed to their work, feel that their jobs are important, know that their opinions and ideas have value, and often go beyond their immediate job responsibilities for the good of the organization.

But, remember that not all organizations are the same. Highly mechanized, low skilled jobs are often far more difficult to achieve "employee engagement.” The philosophy-laden (PL) approach to managing is focused on the higher-level needs of people for affiliation, self-satisfaction, recognition and actualization. It does not ignore our lower-level needs for safety, security and competitive compensation and benefits which it provides, but the focus is on the mission and the work.
