DATA ANALYTICS FOR BUSINESS

This team assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to gain hands-on skills with Business Analytics software, specifically SAS Enterprise Miner, SAS Enterprise Guide and tableau.

It consists of two parts (see full details below). In brief, your team will:

1. Identify an organisation/problem, prepare a project plan and implement a model solution.
2. Present your solution to the class during practical sessions.

{Related to this project you will carry out an individual research proposal this is designed to give you sufficient background to assist the team in brainstorming ideas for the final proposal, and to develop your understanding of the theory behind business analytics}

PART 1 DATA DRIVEN DECISION MAKING WITH SAS ENTERPRISE MINER

Overview
One of the main activities of managers in any sector is to make decisions. For example, a manager might ask: Which classes of customers should I target for new product promotions? What kinds of customers should I be careful to evaluate in credit card applications? Which products can I sell to customers as a package?

Your task for this assignment is to identify and fully describe the specific requirements for a decision task of your own design. Specifically, your team will produce a report (not exceeding 3000 words) that will:

- Identify the decision situation with problem description and requirements. (HINT: Describe the background to the decision to be made, identify the variable which you are trying to predict, and any constraints.)
- Consider what type(s) of data will be needed as input into your decision making model. (HINT: Where will it come from? What format will the data be in, e.g., financial data drawn from company sales transactions, composition or other scientific data from testing a product, opinion data from a survey?)
- Discuss the model used to analyse the data and reach a decision. (HINT: Will you use classification or clustering or other model? Is the decision a strategic, tactical or operational one?)
- Visualize the data using Tableau (HINT: draw on design principles from class readings, and visualization techniques learned in class, consider enhancing the data where necessary (e.g geocoding or bringing in complementary data sources)
- Analyze the data using SAS Enterprise Miner. (HINT: use lab time and the assistance of tutors; you can pre-process the data in MSExcel if you wish.)
- Make a decision based on the analysis, and justify your decision. (HINT: Justification might include presenting various scenarios, and presenting and explaining graphical output from SAS)

Part 2:

Your team has 20 minutes maximum to present your solution to the class (including set up and pack up time). It is expected that the presentation will be of a high quality, and the use of presentation software (e.g., PowerPoint) is recommended.

For the presentation, marks will be allocated to the team (maximum 5%) as well as individual team members (maximum 10%), for a total weighting of 15%. A paper peer evaluation system be put in place to provide additional qualitatitve feedback, but no marks are allocated for this.

The following constraints apply to your presentation:
- All group members must present as individual marks will be awarded for each team member's presentation skills/style.
- Your team presentation should cover:
o Description and Scope of Problem (organisation, decision to be made)
o Methodology (how you picked the approach you did - e.g. suitability of data, nature of problem, how you identified the dependent variable)
o Description of the BI solution data mining approach (justification of decision)
o Presentation of the visualization of your data

Please let your tutor know if your team has any special requirements for their presentation (e.g., laptop, speakers). NOTE: Your team will have access to a data projector and an internet connection. HINT: Be careful if you are accessing the internet or other sites as technical difficulties could seriously hamper your presentation (and marks).
