Biggest life transitions-becoming a mother

Problem:

Over the last six years, one of the biggest life transitions I have experienced has been becoming a mother. Six years ago, I welcomed my first child, and three years ago, I had my second child. Becoming a parent has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it has also come with significant changes, challenges, and losses.

Some of the positives of this transition include experiencing unconditional love, watching my children grow and develop their own personalities, and creating meaningful family memories. Becoming a mother has given me a greater sense of purpose and has helped me grow in patience, responsibility, and compassion. It has also strengthened my desire to help others, which ultimately influenced my decision to pursue a degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

At the same time, there have been negatives and losses associated with this transition. Becoming a parent required me to give up a degree of independence, spontaneity, and personal time. There are fewer opportunities to focus solely on my own needs, and balancing family, work, and graduate school can sometimes feel overwhelming. These losses are often not openly discussed because society expects parents to feel grateful and happy all the time. As a result, feelings of grief related to the loss of freedom, personal identity, or previous routines can become examples of disenfranchised grief because they are not always recognized or validated by others.

Another significant loss during this period was the death of my father two years ago. My father battled Kennedy's Disease, a progressive neuromuscular disorder, for over 30 years. Despite his illness, he remained the nucleus of our family and was the person who brought everyone together. Losing him created a profound shift in our family system and left a void that is still felt today. While his death was an acknowledged loss, some aspects of my grief felt disenfranchised because people often expected me to move forward once a certain amount of time had passed, even though grief does not follow a timeline.

This transition has taught me that joy and grief can exist simultaneously. Becoming a mother brought tremendous happiness, while losing my father brought deep sadness. Together, these experiences have shaped who I am today and have strengthened my understanding of resilience, family, and the importance of supporting others through life's transitions and losses.
