There is a lot of talk about manners and kindness in the workplace.  There are often workplace meetings about tolerance and learning to be more kind.  Things that should be second nature to people are now having to be taught in these types of classes.  According to the lecture for week one of this course, there is often an attitude of entitlement amongst people which tends to lead to more rudeness than before. (University)

A study of one thousand Americans conducted in 2011 by Weber Shandwick and Powell Tate showed that about 86% felt as though they had been treated poorly in the workplace at some point.  And 6 out of 10 Americans felt as though they, themselves, had been rude at times.  (The Hindustan Times, 2011)  Peter Post, correspondent for the Boston Globe, found that rudeness in the workplace is definitely on the rise.  He states that fifteen years ago, the University of North Carolina's business school conducted a study that showed about 55% of workers thought that they had been treated in a rude manner whereas a study in 2014 showed that 67% of workers felt that they had been treated poorly.  (Post, 2015)  He goes on to state that this type of overall feeling that rudeness is in the workplace can negatively affect a company's bottom line.  This occurs because many people who are treated poorly spend time worrying over the incident rather than focusing their energies on productivity in the workplace.  Many even choose to leave a job rather than deal with the rude behavior.  Companies thrive on valued workers and if the environment is not a safe one to work in, they will lose good employees.  Post states that the bottom line is, "incivility and rudeness have negative effects on profits and productivity." (Post, 2015) He encourages companies to promote a positive working atmosphere with consideration and respect.

Post has a good point in encouraging companies to create a safe environment for their employees.  This is imperative to any type of company.  And employees must remember to treat others kindly and with respect, even if they do not always agree with the choices their coworkers are making.  The Bible encourages us to treats others kindly.  Jesus ate with those who were considered outcasts and sinners.  He did not discriminate based on lifestyle choices or how prestigious a person may be. Christians in the workplace should remember that no matter what their choice of vocation may be, they are working for the Lord.  I Thessalonians 1:3 states that Christians should be "constantly bearing in mind your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the presence of our God and Father."
