Because most right-wing hate groups have a purely domestic following, many of their recruitment and propaganda activities are protected Constitutional rights. The same activities done abroad or by designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations are illegal under US law. Moroeover, most of the illegal activities done by members or sympathizers of these groups fall under the normal categories of illegal activities, and are not thought of as terrorism (ie, drug trafficking, burglary, assault, etc). In fact, despite demographic data which might lead us to predict that there would be hundreds of cases of right-wing hate based terror in the US on a yearly basis, the phenomenon is pretty rare.
What accounts for this? Why, despite so many who sympathize with some of the rhetoric of such groups, are there so few actual cases of terrorism associated with them? Discuss.
