Back-projection: A term most often applied to the procedure for reconstructing plausible HIV incidence curves from the AIDS incidence data. The method or technique assumes that the probability distribution of the incubation time period of AIDS has been estimated accurately from separate cohort studies and uses this distribution to project AIDS incidence data backwards to reconstruct the HIV epidemic curve which could plausibly have led to observed AIDS incidence data.
