At what point quality of life override need to prolong life

Assignment task: The sanctity of life vs. the quality of life has been an important debate in our society. Needless to say, this is a very emotional and controversial topic. In the U.S, while there are a few states that legally allow a patient's wish for physician-assisted suicide, an overwhelming majority of our states make this process illegal.

What would you think about this issue? At what point does the quality of life override the need to prolong life? Consider you are a family member of the patient in the below scenario. What should be done and why?

Barbara is the patient. This 43-year-old woman suffered massive brain damage in a car accident, and doctors are 90 percent sure it is irreversible. She is unaware of her surroundings but may live for many years. The family's savings have already been used up to provide her with care; three children planning to attend college have had to forego their education and take jobs.
