Association between amount of time dining and money spent

Assignment Problem: Data were collected over a one month time period for a random sample of 100 groups of diners at a restaurant. Data were collected for each table and included the following variables:

  • whether the group was having lunch or dinner
  • whether or not the group had made a reservation in advance
  • number of diners in the group (categorized as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5-6, 7+)
  • whether or not the group was visiting the restaurant as a celebration
  • the average amount of money spent per diner ($)
  • the amount of time spent dining (minutes)
  • the tip amount (as a % of the table total)

For each of the following research questions, choose the technique we have studied that should be used to address the question.

a) Is there an association between the amount of time dining and the amount of money spent per diner?   [ Select ]  ["One sample z-test of a proportion", "Two sample z-test of two proportions", "One sample t-test of a mean", "Two sample t-test of two independent means or pooled t-test", "Paired t-test", "Chi-square goodness-of-fit test", "Chi-square test of independence", "Simple linear regression"]

b) Is there a difference in the percentage tip for groups who reserved their table and those that didn't?   [ Select ]  ["One sample z-test of a proportion", "Two sample z-test of two proportions", "One sample t-test of a mean", "Two sample t-test of two independent means or pooled t-test", "Paired t-test", "Chi-square goodness-of-fit test", "Chi-square test of independence", "Simple linear regression"]

c) Were diners more likely to make reservations for dinner than for lunch?   [ Select ]  ["One sample z-test of a proportion", "Two sample z-test of two proportions", "One sample t-test of a mean", "Two sample t-test of two independent means or pooled t-test", "Paired t-test", "Chi-square goodness-of-fit test", "Chi-square test of independence", "Simple linear regression"]

d) Does the distribution of number of diners in the group match what was observed prior to the pandemic?   [ Select ]  ["One sample z-test of a proportion", "Two sample z-test of two proportions", "One sample t-test of a mean", "Two sample t-test of two independent means or pooled t-test", "Paired t-test", "Chi-square goodness-of-fit test", "Chi-square test of independence", "Simple linear regression"]

e) Does the average amount of time dining exceed 90 mins?   [ Select ]  ["One sample z-test of a proportion", "Two sample z-test of two proportions", "One sample t-test of a mean", "Two sample t-test of two independent means or pooled t-test", "Paired t-test", "Chi-square goodness-of-fit test", "Chi-square test of independence", "Simple linear regression"]

f) Is there an association between the number of diners in the group and whether or not the group is celebrating something?   [ Select ]  ["One sample z-test of a proportion", "Two sample z-test of two proportions", "One sample t-test of a mean", "Two sample t-test of two independent means or pooled t-test", "Paired t-test", "Chi-square goodness-of-fit test", "Chi-square test of independence", "Simple linear regression"]
