The Race Card

Assignment: Think about the word 'race'. How would you summarize your thoughts, your experiences or observations about race into one sentence that has only six words? This sentence can be about your race, culture and/or ethnicity. Think about your experiences, questions, hopes, dreams, laments or observations about race and identity. Your thoughts can be thoughtful, funny, heartbreaking, brave, angry, or hopeful.
There is a project that NPR is doing called 'Race Card' where people have to summarize their thoughts, experiences or observations about race into one sentence. I challenge you to do this exercise (the question above), because I know some of you can come up with a powerful sentence about race. If we come up with some good sentences, we can submit them to the Race Card Project.

Here are some statements that have been posted on the Race Card Project to get you thinking:
"My mixed background means 'White Enough'"
"See a Soul, not a label."
"Don't cry. Mama loves your curls."
"Afraid children won't look like me"
"My name and skin don't match."
"Lonely life when black look white"
"The future belongs to the hybrids."
"I won't disrespect my white mother!"
"Not 'bi-racial,' not 'mixed,' just human!"
