Assignment-lateral desig of high rise buildings

Assignment : LATERAL DESIG OF HIGH RISE BUILDINGS

The high-rise building shown in figure below is composed of 32 floors with a total height of 320ft, a width of 80ft and a length of 160ft. It is required to design this building under lateral loads (due to wind loads). The wind load is assumed to be uniform along the height of the building with a destiny of 1000 lb/ft of the height acting on the length of the building. Check the following structural systems for resisting the lateral loads and determine the most efficient system to be used in this building.

1- Shear wall systems
2- Coupled shear wall system
3- Rigid frame system
4- Combined rigid frame & shear wall system
5- Outrigger system with shear walls as the core system

In your design analysis please follow the following rules:

• To make a comparison between the systems, select the dimensions of the structural elements so that the volume of the construction material per floor is the same for all the five systems.

• Select reasonable sizes for the different structural elements. You may search online for the common sizes.

• The construction material is concrete. Assume uncracked section in your analysis.

• Perform the analysis using any available analysis software. Check the results by performing hand calculations(few) and by using excel sheets. You may use vertical and/or horizontal lumping to facilitate hand calculations.

• While performing hand calculations, you may neglect the effect of shear deformation but shall consider the effect of beam/ column end rigidity.
