Report on demographic risk factors in primary health care

Task:

Part 1: Complete pre-workshop activity (found in UTSOnline) based on the reading of The Australian Indigenous Health InfoNet Guidelines for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Terminology.

Part 2: Using the data from the 2012-13 Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Survey and Review of diabetes among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (Australian Indigenous Health InfoNet) and describe the demographic profile of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. Students should include age, sex, and any three other social determinants of health. Compare and contrast the demographic indicators for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population with the population as a whole. Identify the prevalence of two risk factors associated with diabetes in both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the population as a whole.

Part 3: Discuss reasons why Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples experience poorer health compared to the non-Indigenous population.

Part 4: Discuss each principle of primary health care in relation to the demographic profile and health needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living with diabetes. Discuss strategies you would use to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to enable them equitable access to PHC.
