As Americans, we are taught and growing accepting two fundamental premises:
Progress is good;
Progress is inextricably bound up with the advance of technology.
Yet, there are many people who do not believe these basic principles. They argue (among other things) that there is a cost to "progress," that the prosperity that Americans and Europeans enjoy has been bought at the price of greatly extended poverty and suffering in other places around the globe. That the human condition is not, in general, improved by the advanced technologies which we enjoy today.
Argue for or against the idea that progress is necessarily good and the role of technology in progress.
