As a healthcare provider in todays ever -changing healthcare environment, one must be able to perform within the realm of medical informatics. This is a broad ranging term which encompasses nursing informatics and consumer informatics (Czar &Hebda 2013).

In my time as a registered nurse, I have participated in the conversion of paper format into electronic format. This endeavor relied on various outside venders with input from the medical disciplines. After researching ways to transition paper files to electronic files, it was concluded the simplest way to achieve this goal would be to incorporate the use of a software designed specifically for the task of converting paper forms into electronic forms.

Many Healthcare agencies model their practice with the out look of evidence-based practice is foundational for excellent clinical practice, in the development of practice guidelines, and decision making about diagnostic testing and the changes in treatments or procedures (Johnson, Klardie, McNaughton, & Meyers, 2004). The (EMAR) has given greater speed and accessibility to information for medical personnel, which will lead to better patient outcomes.

As a member of nursing management with a fully functional Electronic Medical record (EMAR), I could access clinical information to help decrease the nursing budget by quickly locating individual patients who always refused certain medications. The medical director was provided with the information and promptly discontinued the medication, saving the facility unnecessary costs. As stated in (Hamric, Hansen, Tracy, & O'Grady 2014), In healthcare we typically use three types of information to analyze results and inform outcomes. These processes are financial information, administrative information and clinical information.

Due to my experience in healthcare informatics, I feel comfortable in identifying target populations, gathering applicable data and producing measurable results deliverable to stakeholders. In my current practice, I am responsible for using various programs to run reports on clinical outcomes of patients. Secondly, I use demographics obtained via administrative information in monthly reporting. Third, financial information is used daily when establishing patients with home health or short-term rehab post discharge. All these activities strengthen my competency in data management.
