Art and human requirements

The first task consists of reading two essays by Lyuba Encheva and David Halle, respectively.

a) Memory in Digital Self-Portrayals by Lyuba Encheva, Ryerson University, Ontario, Canada

b) The family photograph by David halle

Briefly describe and summarize what each essay says. Give a synopsis of each text. What does each author state? What generates meaning in each of these two settings described by both authors? How do these practices described in Lyuba's and Halle's texts compare to, or differ from one another? How does photography generate meaning for people, then and today? What has changed with the widespread use of digital photography according to these texts?

The second task asks you to reflect on what you have learned from these texts in relation to your own photographic practice. Briefly describe your own practice of taking photographs in light of Lyuba's arguments and theses. If you do not take any photographs, you can also focus on what you observe around you. How do friends and family utilize photography?

How does photography generate and hold meaning in people's lives today? Think of Encheva's text when describing what you observe.

LENGTH: 3-5 pages, double-spaced, regular margins.
