The Actress’ Dilemma:

After years of hardwork and paying her “dues” a young actress won an academy award for best actress in a supporting role.  The next week, she flew to her hometown to celebrate her achievement with her family and friends. The first night of her arrival, after celebrating at her  favorite restaurant, she prepares to head home. As she walks out to the parking lot, she sees a vaguely familiar man standing beside her car. The man runs up and hugs her telling her how proud he is of her. After releasing from his embrace she looks at the man and realizes it is her father whom she hasn’t seen since she was 7 years old. Her father apologizes and asks to be a part of her life. Should she forgive him?

Answer 4 out of the 5 Essays. Each one of these questions must be in one full page in essay form.

1) Briefly discuss Aristotle’s concept of natural justice and conventional justice. Which approach to justice should the Actress take to make the most moral decision?

2) Which of Aristotle’s virtues would prescribe that the actress forgive her father? Which, if any, of the virtues would proscribe that she cut off her father?

3) Use Kant’s Categorical Imperative to evaluate the outcome of the Actress choosing to forgive her father. Then use the Categorical Imperative to evaluate the outcome of the Actress choosing to ignore her father. Is one to choice to be preferred over the other from a Kantian perspective?

4) Make a Utilitarian evaluation to evaluate the outcome of the Actress choosing to forgive her father. Then make a Utilitarian evaluation to evaluate the outcome of the Actress choosing to ignore her father? Which choice will bring the greatest amount of pleasure over the least amount of pain?

5) What are the relevant social contracts as it pertains to this dilemma? According to these social contracts, what regard, should this Actress have for her father?
