Please read and adhere to the following!

1) Naming convention when saving/up loading your document. First initial Full last name and assignment. i.e ASmithweek4. This will help me out greatly to standardize this.

2) Critique (general wrt all writing)

Read up on/learn MLA format and follow, I will not accept error formats for week four. Failure to follow will be an automatic 20 pt deduction before I start grading

Make your thesis stand out (italics) all other font/pitch should be in accordance with MLA format. Failure to follow will incur a 15 point deduction. I should not have to dig to figure out what you are proposing as a thesis.

Work on outlininig in the first paragraph and transitions throughout and better summaries in the final paragraph (if you do not know what a transition is.... look it up and start utilizing them. As far as technical writing, you can't find a better technique to get your point across. It will help you in the military from writing a position paper to conducting a brief!! Get with me if you need help (call email etc).
Write simple...... grammar, sentence structure and word choice. If you try to get to eloquent it will hurt you. I am not saying dumb it down, I am just saying know yourself and stay within yourself, I do not deduct for easy to read papers!!!

Proof read, proof read, proooof read!!! Way to many errors in week 2 paper when it came to things that could have been caught had you gone back and read your work. Proof read errors are unacceptable. Heavy deductions to follow.

Please adhere to the guidance listed below for this weeks writing assignment. If you do not know how to formulate an argumentative thesis please contact me..... a synopsis of the readings will not suffice this week (ie an automatic failing grade).

Late work. If you do not tell me you are going to be late and give me the date you will have your assignment in by (read between the lines I am giving you a lot of rope don't hang yourself with it) before the assignment is due....heavy deductions. I am very lenient given that I know the frenetic pace of your work! Keep me informed and you will be fine.

Gents I have high expectations, given your backgrounds..(highly intelligent, extremely motivated men willing to do a lot of unthinkable things), leads me to the conclusion that if you are told to follow a specific format you can do that. I understand if you are terrible with regard to analyzing poetry, but I know you can at least follow an MLA format!

You can select to write about any one of Owen's or Sassoon's poems we read together in class, except for "Dulce et Decorum Est" by Owen. Given the length of this paper, keep your focus very narrow and formulate an argumentative thesis about a particular aspect of the poem. Students tend to feel intimidated by writing about poetry, but remember that you use the same approach to constructing an argument that you would use for any essay about other literary genres. You can refer to the introductory notes from week two, which include questions you want to consider when analyzing poetry, to help you think through this assignment. Keep in mind that you have to propose a thesis that you then support with evidence from the poem. Be sure to avoid descriptive statements such as "Owen uses Horace's poem in ‘Dulce et Decorum Est.'" Rather, the following alternative would be more effective: "Owen uses Horace's poem in order to comment ironically on perceptions of war as heroic and ennobling."
