Are rights/liberties absolute as jefferson suggests

Assignment task:

Thomas Jefferson declares that there exist "self-evident truths" in the Declaration of Independence and that "...all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights..."

Is Thomas Jefferson correct? If so, why do we as a society feel entitled to vote on what Rights others are allowed? Do we sometimes claim things as Rights that are not actually Rights at all?

*Think about all of the different Rights that are granted or restricted for groups within American society. Consider ways in which Rights for some can infringe on the Rights of others.

Are Rights/Liberties absolute as Jefferson suggests or are they actually more of a negotiated status quo?
