For this reason, it is difficult for family members to see their loved one uninterested in eating or unable to eat (Gadtheart). When families see their loved one at this stage, the realization that they are going to die truly sets in. The family reaction is to assume that if they can keep the patient eating, they can keep them alive - despite their terminal diagnosis (Gadtheart).
