TELECOMMUNICATIONS France Telecom is one of the world's leading telecommunications carriers, with over 91 million customers on five continents in 220 countries and territories. Recording more than a 500 million calls per day, France Telecom required a solution that would provide a unique view for each of its customers. The call data included length, frequency, and amount, as well as information about cancellations and payment types. France Telecom needed quick data analysis to accurately understand customer behavior in order to adapt products and services for each unique customer. Faced with more than 50 separate databases, increasing traffic and escalating requirements from internal staff, France Telecom needed a new system that would become the online repository for all telecom traffic, support fraud detection efforts, improve customer service, and enable effective network traffic analysis. France Telecom's data warehouse, named Symphonie, supports 1145 users who generate global traffic of 23 requests per second, with more than 600 concurrent users during peak hours. Standard online CDR queries complete in less than 4 seconds. As many as 65 million new CDRs are added hourly to the data warehouse, resulting in up to 100 gigabytes of new data added daily. The Symphonie data warehouse holds more than 200 billion CDRs.
