Find an article that has to relate with foreign policy.

Writing Assignment

Writing assignment asks you to apply concepts to an international news story on the domestic politics of a foreign country or region from the last year. Students will identify, interpret, and/or critique our general concepts in real events. Do not use a news story that only concerns the United States, US foreign policy, etc.

The article and relevant class concepts are to be chosen by the student. News articles can be chosen from the Economist or New York Times-students wishing to use other reputable sources certainly may do so. Articles must be full length articles (not bullet news stories) and not editorial or opinion pieces. The papers are not to be summaries of the subject news story. The core requirement of the paper is to identify and apply class concepts to the politics or events discussed in the news article. I expect students to take the general material discussed in class and identify how it relates to the speci?cs of the politics in their story.

Papers failing to apply general class concepts and relying on a summary of the news will be heavily penalized. Good papers will make connections between the speci?cs detailed in the article to the broader questions in comparative politics we discussed, even connecting multiple chapters or ideas. Excellent papers will discuss students' own original hypotheses about the politics and suggest evidence in the article that could validate or invalidate those hypotheses. Your paper must have a bibliography with a citation to the article you chose as a subject, with links to the electronic version where applicable.
Key Topics discussed in class:

• Failed States
• Authoritarianism
• Resource Curse
• Democracy Measurement
