Animal wastes

Large quantities of animal wastes are available in the country but generally they are low in nutrient content with poor feeding value to the animals. However, poultry excreta, having sizable nitrogen, energy and mineral contents, can be converted into animal feeds. Poultry is being raised largely in the organized sector; hence collection of their excreta (without litter) is not a big problem. However, presence of pathogens restricts its feeding. The pathogens can be taken care either by drying or ensiling processes. Ample evidences are available to show that properly processed poultry excreta can be incorporated in the ration of ruminants without adversely affecting their productivity and quality of milk or meat. Some byproducts of animal origin such as bone, meat, blood etc. also have potential for animal feeding after their processing but currently Govt. of India has banned their use for this purpose in view of possible health risks involved.
