Discussion Week: Vaccinations as a Prophylactic Measure
Four common childhood vaccines required for entry into kindergarten are DTap, MMR, Polio, and Varicella. Vaccines are necessary to reduce burden from communicable diseases and associated mortalities, save lives, and completely eradicate or control the spread of infectious diseases. From an economic standpoint, vaccines help economic growth, sustainability, and efficiency of healthcare systems. They are preventive measures that improve health and allow society to contribute to economic growth by better physical. cognitive, and education performance. Vaccines ensure retention of healthcare resources when people are healthy and considered the most cost-effective interventions that contribute to healthcare system efficiency. Disease prevention yields wealth, due to good health that positively impacts economic growth from increased production, especially with cost savings associated with disease treatments and long-term disabilities. Moreover, hospital infections and cancers are prevented, and prescription use is reduced. Promoting public health reduces mortality and morbidity rates, thus increasing consumption and gross domestic products (1).
Currently there are still disparities in accessibility to vaccines. More incentives for vaccine development are needed through attributing more economic value to disease prevention via tax credits, public private partnerships, return on investments of vaccines, programs to inform affordability, and stakeholders (government, policy makers, international agencies, and medical community) improving their roles in helping ensure vaccine programs are valuable (2). More collaboration is imperative among community-based organizations, medical communities, and local health departments to provide resources for population specific needs in rolling out vaccinations, for example health contract tracing teams or vaccine mobiles to underserved communities. In conclusion, such recommendations could alleviate the current vaccine barriers and spread knowledge of the importance/impact vaccines have on public health.
