ASSIGNMENTS:
Suppose you are an ethical consultant working with the research team. Review the proposal carefully to see whether there are any issues that may not comply with the principles of beneficence, respect for autonomy, and justice. Write an essay in which you justify your concerns (how and why those issues do not comply with the ethical principles) and offer your recommendations to resets e those identified problems (what kinds of changes the research team needs to make in order to avoid these problems).
In your essay, you should specifically focus on the following questions:
I. Analyze the proposal according to the principle of beneficence. Are all potential harms to the subjects discussed properly? Are all benefits to the subjects and the society discussed properly? Do the benefits of the proposed study outweigh its harms?
2. Analyze the proposal according to the principle of respect for autonomy. Is the procedure to obtain informed consent from the subjects appropriate? Is the information given to the subjects appropriate? Are there any undue influences or unjustifiable pressures that may put on the
subjects?
3. Analyze the proposal according to the principle of justice. Is it fair to provide the subjects with lead reduction treatments that are less effective than the best-known method available? Does the proposed study place any unfair burdens on the already burdened subjects, i.e. people who are poor and living in low-income housings? Should extra protections be offered to the subjects who are vulnerable because of their innate disadvantages? Before you answer these questions, clarify the meaning of justice according to your understanding.
The length of your essay should not exceed five standard pages.
