Guidelines for Contemporary Animation

Papers need to be written in the MLA (Modern Language Association) format. The paper needs to be three (full pages) to five pages long, double spaced, with one inch margins (top, bottom, right and left sides). Print on one side of the paper only!

The font size needs to be 10 to 12 point and the font used should be easy to read (either Times, Courier, or Helvetica).

Feature film titles need to be italicized.

The paper must be written in the third person (never refer to yourself in the paper [ no "I", "me", or "you"]). The majority of the paper should be your own work and quotations and summaries of other's writing should be used sparingly.

All quotations, paraphrases and summaries must be properly annotated or its inclusion is considered plagiarism and is sufficient reason to receive a failing grade on the paper. Each paragraph should be indented five spaces. The paper should be double spaced with only one blank line between sentences.

The paper must be a critical analysis or a comparison/contrast of films shown in the course, based on the topics handed out earlier in the semester, unless the instructor has approved another topic. A critical analysis is not the same as a film review. Papers that are simply a "Roger Ebert"-style "thumbs up-thumbs down" report on whether or not you "liked the film" will not be accepted.

The paper must contain an introduction and a conclusion. The introductory paragraph or paragraphs must contain a topic sentence, which alerts the reader to the premise behind your paper. Additionally, the introductory paragraphs should serve as an outline for the content of the rest of your paper. A good strategy is to dedicate a sentence in the introduction as a preview of the content of each of the subsequent paragraphs in your paper. The conclusion must summarize the points made in your paper. Papers that just "end" without a proper conclusion will be penalized.

Reference material must be listed in a reference page after the last page of your paper. Each page of your paper should have your name and the page number in the upper right-hand corner. Please also include a cover page, which includes (in the lower right-hand corner) your name, the title of the course, and the date. Also, in the center of the cover page, please title your paper. However, do not place your paper in a folder or binder.
