Identify and analyze the first two Russian Revolutions of 1917, the “Third Russian Revolution” of 1928-1929, and the first five-year plan of 1928-1932. In what ways did these revolutions radically change Russian society? In what ways did these revolutions radically change Russian society?

Discuss whether Stalin’s collectivization policies were successful or not.. Use historical examples to support your answer.

Describe the rise of fascism in Germany and Italy (Mussolini and Hitler), and compare Hitler’s Nazism and Stalin’s communism. Indicate the conditions present in Germany that made it possible for Hitler to come to power. Then describe the Nazi persecution of the Jews. Analyze how a cultured people like the Germans could systematically kill twelve million Jews and other minorities.

And compare Germany and Japan (identify and describe leadership qualities of respective leaders). How did the Cold War affect the political and social climate in the United States during the 1950s? In particular, how do you explain McCarthyism and the Red Scare? Can you think of any parallels to these events in today’s society?
