Analyze the dilemma of creating cohesive societies while preserving their distinct cultural identities (keeping in mind the key factor is tolerance).

Think nationally and multi-culturally and then please answer all these questions:
What is the difference between tolerance and understanding?
How well do we know each other? How/why?
Nationally speaking, does knowing and interacting with each other help solve racial issues and build bridges across different groups? How/why?
