1. Is it possible to achieve zero inventories? Why or why not?
2. One way to help achieve lean production systems is to employ flexible automated manufacturing equipment and automated material handling systems. A natural result of such a move is that fewer people are required in the process, an issue addressed regularly in negotiations with labor unions. Do you think there is a conflict between such a move and the principle of Respect for People in the Toyota Production System?
3. Explain what lean production is.
4. Illustrate how lean concepts can be applied to supply chain processes.
5. Analyze supply chain processes using value stream mapping.
6. Apply lean concepts to service processes.
7. How does Goldratt's Theory of Constraints (TOC) differ from other current approaches to continuous improvement in organizations? How is it similar?
8. As an individual or small group, visit your favorite fast-food restaurant during lunch period. As you order, and while you are eating, observe as much of the process as you can. Where are the bottlenecks in the system? What recommendations can you come up with to relieve them?
9. Provide citation and reference to the material(s) you discuss. Describe what you found interesting regarding this topic, and why.
10. Describe how you will apply that learning in your daily life, including your work life.
11. Describe what may be unclear to you, and what you would like to learn.
