Assignment Task:

Project 1: Analyze Perception and Self-Concept in Communication and Apply the Transactional Model Choose one (1) of the listed movies, watch it, and analyze it based on what you have read in chapters 1 and 3 of the textbook.  You will need to answer the analysis questions for each task by applying the terminology and knowledge presented within the textbook.  You may utilize more than one of the movies, but it must be clear which movie you are referencing within your answer.

Documenting properly prevents plagiarism.  All of your answers that refer to scenes from the movie(s) must include summary description of the scene as well as the beginning and ending time stamps that illustrate your analysis. Task 1 - Self-concept and Identity Management Choose one of the main characters and analyze their self-concept.  Be sure to address most major characteristics as mentioned in the textbook (section 3.1).  Include a discussion about reflected appraisal, self-esteem, social comparison, and self-fulfilling prophecy in your analysis.  Also, be sure to indicate how self-concept affects communication with others.

Discuss this character's identity management and how that can impact communication with others.  Be sure to discuss their perceived self versus their presenting self, facework, and the characteristics of identity management.

Task 2 - Perception Choose a scene of conflict from the movie that illustrates the three stages of the perception process and how they can vary between two people having the same experience/interaction. Describe the three stages as they occur.  Be sure to address problematic perceptual tendencies that are present in the conflict.  After discussing the scene of conflict, indicate what perceptual skills could prevent/ease such conflict and how you think they could be applied to this scene. Task 3 - The Transactional Communication Model Apply the transactional communication model to one conversation in the movie and answer the essay question below.  Make sure to identify and explain/discuss each of the following terms within this conversation: Communicators (Name them) Communicator environment/context personal experience cultural background physical location Noise external/physical Psychological physiological Co-created Meaning Channel

Discuss any role technology plays in the movie and its impact on the communication between characters.  If no technology is prevalent, discuss how technology used today could have impacted/changed the communication climate in the movie if used.
