Analyze in essay form ability, disability, and impairment

Problem: Perfectly analyze in essay form Ability, Disability, and Impairment

This week's readings and lecture is good and reshaped my understanding of ability and disability by teaching me that disability is not simply a medical condition, but also a social and cultural issue shaped by the world around us. Before this module, I mainly thought about disability from a biomedical perspective, meaning I focused on a person's physical or mental limitations as the primary problem. However, Professor Clayton Trutor introduced the sociological concept of the "social model of disability," which argues that people are often disabled more by society's attitudes, structures, and lack of accessibility than by their actual impairments. This perspective completely changed how I think about disability because it shifted the focus away from blaming the individual and toward examining the barriers created by society. For example, the lecture explained that paralysis itself is the impairment, but the disability is created when buildings lack ramps, elevators, or accessible spaces that would allow someone using a wheelchair to fully participate in society. This example made me realize that many obstacles' people face are preventable and are the result of poor planning, discrimination, or lack of awareness rather than the impairment.
