Analysis techniques for system reliability

Task:

Conduct a Failure Mode and Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) on the solar air collector system shown below. The analysis should follow AS IEC 60812-2008 Analysis techniques for system reliability – Procedure for failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA). The failure modes associated with carbon emission should be highlighted and discussed as a type of functional failure.

Assignment report:

In practice, FMECA reports are usually prepared and presented as formal reports and usually with the same status as an engineering drawing. These reports are used by a wide range of disciplines responsible for the design, operations, maintenance and maintenance support of the product. Therefore it is important that you prepare and present your findings in a report format that could be used by engineers, trainers, documentation writers, spares planners, maintenance planners, and other decision makers.

a) Describe the chosen equipment or process clearly using a drawing, sketch, diagram, description, or photograph; and identify its functionality within the asset.

b) Describe the use and application of FMECA as they relate to through life asset and facility management decisions.

c) Discuss any specific research and modeling actions that you carried out for this assignment.

d) Assess between 12 and 20 functional failure or damage modes.

e) Identify and discuss any single points of failure that need to be addressed for criticality reasons, and your proposed remedy for them.

f) Create a tabulation of the FMECA/DMEA factors

1. Failure modes
2. Failure mechanisms
3. Failure effects
4. RPN – Occurrence, Severity and Detection Rankings
5. Corrective Actions and revised RPNs after corrective actions with justifications.

g. Apply other tools, such as RBD or FTA, to model the asset system chosen and present the method with discussions.

In your conclusion, comment on the FMECA/FEMA and your views of the product’s integrity. These reports usually describe how to improve the reliability of the item of analysis as recommendations.

If necessary, your recommendations could include abandonment, redesign or modifications if you feel it is appropriate to do so.

Suggested Report Structure:

The suggested structure of the FMECA report is as follows.

• Presentation of Report Elements “a to g” identified above
• Conclusions
• Recommendations
• Reference List (cite using Harvard Style)
• Appendixes (FMECA & DMEA worksheets and other supporting material)
