Discussion:
Themes of leadership are common in movies and literature. It is one of the great concepts of society and the field of Organizational Behavior. You need to choose a movie that you think has some important themes or messages about leadership. This analysis will be based on that film.
YOUR ASSIGNMENT
As an analysis of this film, you should examine the various issues of leadership in context of the characters and the circumstances of the story. Please use the material from the assigned readings in the text to support your opinions and conclusions. Use direct quotes from the film whenever possible to illustrate the points being made.
Suggested Format:
1. Brief identification of key characters and the primary leadership theme(s) as they appear in the movie (e.g. forms of power; influence tactics; and leader decision-making styles).
2. Analysis of Leader Behavior
• What form of leadership did the main character or characters use most often? Discuss examples of the various types of leadership styles (autocratic, consultative, facilitative, and delegative).Use the material in Chapter 10, pp. 232-234 for this part of the analysis.
• What means of influence tactics were used by the key characters. Please comment on the relative effectiveness of these tactics. See Chapter 10, pp. 237-240 for some ideas about this.
• Do you think the main character(s) was more of a transformational or a transactional leader? If he or she was transformational, what was the evidence for that? See Chapter 10, pp. 232-234 for the definitions or each type of leadership behavior. If more of a transactional leader, what behaviors lead to you come to this conclusion?
3. Conclusion: In the end, did the main character turn out to be an effective leader? In your opinion, is this the same as being a "good" leader. Does morality have a place in determining the quality of a leader? Please be specific about your conclusion regarding morality and leadership.
